Two years ago, two men with machetes broke into the Guerrette family home in Pittson, Maine and attacked William Guerrette and his daughter, Nicole. They were both hospitalized for weeks and suffered serious brain injuries. Melanie Guerrette, the mother of the family, is now responsible for the care of her husband and her daughter. "I went from just 'the mom' to the complete caregiver for two brain-injured people," she says. Nicole, 13, is missing part of her frontal lobe and has trouble with impulse control. "She lives a whole different life than what she would have lived," Melanie says. "She had to be very strong. Still has to be very strong to go through what she goes through. It's amazing."
